A day trip to Trogir from Split takes you to a three spectacular places!
Our first stop is Salona, the capital of the Roman province of Dalmatia, formed on the delta of the river Jadro. The first inhabitants were the Illyrian tribe Delmati in the 3rd century BC. During the reign of the Roman Empire, Salona became the vastest Roman city on the east coast of the Adriatic and had a population of 60,000. In the 7th century, the town was attacked by Avars and Slavs. Residents fled to a shelter on neighboring islands, leaving Salona to decay. Today, Salona’s ruins offer a captivating glimpse into ancient times, making it a must-visit for history enthusiasts and archaeology lovers.
The second stop of our day trip to Trogir from Split is the city of Kaštela. Kaštela is the common name for castles - fortifications built in the Kaštela Bay near Split in the 15th and 16th centuries. The castles served as the country houses of Renaissance aristocratic families. Seven settlements developed around these fortifications. Kaštela is famous for its wines, olive oil, fishing, and maritime tradition. We will visit the most famous Vitturi castle in Kaštel Lukšić.
Our final stop is the stunning town of Trogir, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the best-preserved Romanesque-Gothic cities in Central Europe. Trogir has a rich history reflected in its magnificent architecture. Explore masterpieces by renowned sculptors such as Nikola Florentinac, whose work can be admired at the chapel of St. John, and Majstor Radovan, creator of the exquisite portal at the Cathedral of St. Lawrence. Trogir’s charm lies not only in its historic landmarks but also in its vibrant atmosphere.
