A day trip to Trogir from Split takes you to a few spectacular places. Our first stop is Salona, the capital of the Roman province of Dalmatia, formed on the delta of the river Jadro. The first inhabitants were the Illyrian tribe Delmati in the 3rd century BC. During the reign of the Roman Empire, Salona became the vastest Roman city on the east coast of the Adriatic and had a population of 60,000. In the 7th century, the town was attacked by Avars and Slavs. Residents fled to a shelter on neighboring islands, leaving Salona to decay.
The second stop of our day trip to Trogir from Split is the city of Kaštela. Kaštela is the common name for castles - fortifications built in the Kaštela Bay near Split in the 15th and 16th centuries. The castles served as the country houses of Renaissance aristocratic families. Seven settlements developed around these fortifications. Kaštela is famous for its wines, olive oil, fishing, and maritime tradition. We will visit the most famous Vitturi castle in Kaštel Lukšić.
Our last locality is Trogir, the best-preserved Romanesque-Gothic city in Central Europe founded by the Greeks in the 3rd century BC. In Trogir, we will see the work of a great sculptor such as Nikola Florentinac (Ćipiko Palace), Majstor Radovan (Radovan's portal at the Cathedral of St. Lawrence showing the birth of Jesus Christ and scenes from his life), Andrija Aleši (baptistery), and many others. The castle and the tower surrounded by walls form the core of Trogir.
